What is a Carat?
A carat (ct) is the standard unit of weight for diamonds and gemstones. One carat equals 200 milligrams (0.2 grams). The term comes from carob seeds, which were historically used as a standard for weighing gems due to their uniform size.
Carat Weight Tiers
0.5 - 1.0 Carat
Popular for solitaire engagement rings. Offers excellent value and visible size.
1.0 - 2.0 Carats
Significant size and presence. Price increases substantially at 1.5 and 2.0 carat marks.
2.0+ Carats
Premium diamonds with exceptional presence. Prices are significantly higher due to rarity.
Price Calculation Example
Diamond prices don't scale linearly with carat weight. Here's why a 2-carat diamond costs more than two 1-carat diamonds:
• Larger diamonds are exponentially rarer
• Price per carat increases with weight
• A 2-carat diamond might cost 3-4x more than a 1-carat diamond of similar quality
• Quality (4Cs) affects pricing more significantly at higher carats
Fractional Carats
Diamonds are often sold in fractional carats (0.75ct, 1.25ct, 1.5ct, etc.). These offer flexibility in finding the perfect balance between size, quality, and budget.
